Florida Hospital Flagler Introduces
A Wireless, High-Definition OR
Florida Hospital Flagler announced that it is the first hospital in the region to install and implement the most advanced, wireless, high-definition, minimally-invasive visualization system available by Stryker Corporation.
This $350,000 investment has upgraded Florida Hospital Flagler’s Operating Room from standard digital-imaging monitors to full-1080p, high-definition monitors, which substantially improves the image clarity and definition of anatomy during surgery.
“It allows us to get a much better viewing of laparoscopic cases,” said Dr. Karen Toppi, Gynecologist at Florida Hospital Flagler. “Details of the human anatomy are incredibly enhanced beyond what we could see with the previous generation of camera technology.”
Terry Huckle, Florida Hospital Flagler Surgical Services Director, agrees.
“This equipment is so essential to the O.R. because the image quality is so clear and crisp; it is as different as night and day,” Huckle said. “It has enhanced the margin of safety simply because the image is so spectacular compared to older technology.”
This new visualization system features the latest in operating room technologies for enhancing the quality and efficiency of surgical procedures by enabling physicians to see better and maneuver instruments more easily during laparoscopic (also known as minimally-invasive) surgeries.
“The high-definition video platform brings an unprecedented level of resolution and visual accuracy to the operating room,” explained Huckle. “The optical clarity and color reproduction are a definitive advantage to our surgical teams.”
The wireless equipment also eliminates cable clutter and potential costly repairs to flat panel monitors. In addition, it is capable of transmitting the surgical video with no perceptible lag or interference throughout the entire operating room allowing surgeons greater flexibility in positioning the surgical display to obtain the best possible view while operating.
The images, both video and still shots, captured by the cameras can be displayed on several flat-screen monitors within the individual operating room suites. All of the information can be saved to a patient’s file and then accessed later for follow up care.
Florida Hospital Flagler surgeons are using the new operating room technology for minimally invasive, camera-assisted laparoscopic surgeries. Typically, minimally-invasive surgery is less traumatic than conventional open surgery, as the patient only receives a few small incisions, while the surgeon uses a specialized camera to view the anatomy and operation on a video monitor.
“With the addition of this new surgical technology, Florida Hospital Flagler reaffirms its commitment to providing the highest level of healthcare to our community,” said David Ottati, Florida Hospital Flagler CEO. “From a surgical and technological perspective, this new technology enables us to offer the most sophisticated resources available to our patients. For our patients, it means they will find the most progressive health care available in their own community. For our physicians, it means we will continue to provide them with the latest technology in order to provide high quality patient care.”
